Lobster’s papercraft Punta Tagliamento Lighthouse, Bibione

The Punta Tagliamento lighthouse is located in Bibione, on the right bank of the mouth of the Tagliamento river, in the municipality of San Michele al Tagliamento, in the metropolitan city of Venice.

Immersed in the naturalistic area of Punta Tagliamento, the lighthouse can be reached on foot or by bicycle via panoramic routes or by walking along the beach. Near the truncated cone lantern, 25 meters high, stands a two-storey building with a rectangular plan, which once served as a home for the caretakers.

The lighthouse was built in 1913 by the Royal Navy on the Venetian side of the mouth of the Tagliamento river. In 1915, during the First World War, the lighthouse was hit hard by a bombing and darkened for safety reasons: only in the 1920s did it resume its signaling functions and also became a traffic light station. In 1952 the plant was electrified (previously it was gas-powered) and in 1973 it was completely automated, thus making the presence of custodians no longer necessary.

The lighthouse consists of a 25 meter high masonry tower adjacent to a two-storey keeper’s building, completely restored in June 2015 to be used partly to host exhibitions and cultural events and to celebrate weddings. There are restrooms, picnic tables and snack and drink dispensers available to visitors.

The lighthouse is active, fully automated and operated by the Navy, identified by the code number “4288 E.F.”

The lighthouse can be visited by tourists every day during the summer season and on some days during the rest of the year.

Since the summer of 2021, the lighthouse building has hosted the exhibition “Stories of LuMe – Light and Memories” relating to the history of the lighthouse itself[5] and a multimedia exhibition on the Friulian-speaking minority in Eastern Veneto, created as part of the PRIMIS Project.
